Chapter 23 FOX AND DANA ARE ON THE CASE

FOX AND DANA ABANDON the car and set out on foot, keeping a discreet distance behind their marks in the growing crowd of dragon festival people. Losing Slack for a second time is not an option.

“Do you think they have a plan?” Dana asks. “Or are they just going to wander around all day?”

Fox shrugs. Right now, it looks like wandering around might be it.

“I have a question,” Dana continues. “If we just grab Slack and force him to tell us where the dragon is, what happens?”

“Everyone notices, Slack included,” Fox replies. “And then we have to pull out badges and explain ourselves, and things quickly get complicated.”

“So not an option?”

“No!”

“Okay!” Dana replies, throwing up her hands defensively. “I just want to know what he knows. What they know. It’s kind of driving me crazy.”

“Ninety-five percent of this job is patience,” Fox lectures.

“I know that,” Dana snaps. “You tell me that all the time.”

“That is because it is true.”

In all the back-and-forth, Fox and Dana lose track of Slack and friends. This brings on a wave of panic until they spot them at the mouth of an alley. A flag flies above Cassie’s head, a flag with a giant dragon tail on it. It’s advertising the name of a bookstore. Dana shakes her head. “Dragon Tales?” she replies. “For real? This town is obsessed.”

The group turns down the alley. Fox and Dana lag at the corner, and Fox takes a moment to regret not having a costume. They look weird in their dark suits and shiny shoes. Nobody around here wears a suit, like, ever.

Fox nudges Dana. “Look, they are going into the store.”

“Is this why they came here?” Dana asks in a rush. “Can we count this as progress?”

“Maybe?”

“Now what?”

“We watch. And wait.”

“No chance we can just bust in there and demand to know what is going on?” Dana asks hopefully.

“None,” Fox replies. Dana sighs and leans up against the wall of a building.

And they wait.
